In 2016 my wife and I went to Palm Springs, CA. Along with touring Mid Century Modern homes and hiking in Joshua Tree, We also checked out Salvation Mountain, Slab City / East Jesus and stopped briefly on the shore of the Salton Sea before the stench of dead fish and sea birds forced us to get back in our car.
Salvation Mountain is worth the trip around the Salton Sea to visit. It is a monument to what one gets when one mixes creativity with faith. Not necessarily faith in a higher power, like leonard Knight's, but faith in what one sets out to do, being true to their own singular vision.
Slab City / East Jesus is also worth the visit and just down the road from Salvation Mountain. But beware, the locals of this off the grid, unincorporated community do not tolerate entitled tourists. There are rules. Be respectful. Don't act the fool.
